Eck, Johann

Eck, Johann
(1486–1543)
   Theologian and Economist.
Eck was born Johann Mayr in the town of Eck in Swabia. He was educated at the Universities of Heidelberg, Tübingen and Freiberg and subsequently taught at Ingolstadt. He remained a loyal Roman Catholic and is chiefly remembered for his determined opposition to Martin luther in the Leipzig debate of 1519. He also seems to have been largely responsible for securing the Reformer’s excommunication. He was the author of De Primatu Petri adversus Ludderum (a defence of the Papacy), the Enchiridion Locorum Communium adversus Lutherum et Alias Hostes Ecclesiae (a treatise against the Protestant Reformers) and the confutation of the Augsburg Confession. The Enchiridion went through forty-six printings in fifty years. He also translated the Bible into German and defended the lending of money at up to five per cent interest. Usury had been forbidden by the Church in the Middle Ages and this liberalism towards the taking of interest made the development of modern capitalism possible.
